Keeper’s Cup Returns to Honor Yorktown Crash Victim’s Memory
HISTORIC TRIANGLE — The Gweedo Memorial Foundation is gearing up to welcome families and soccer enthusiasts to the 2025 Keeper’s Cup, running from March 17-20.
The Keeper’s Cup honors Yorktown’s Conner Guido, a passionate soccer goalie whose life was tragically cut short by an underaged, unlicensed driver. His legacy lives on through the event, with the goal of transforming a personal tragedy into life-saving advocacy.
The tournament not only celebrates the love of the game but also aims to educate new teen drivers and their parents on the dangers of destructive driving.
The tournament will take place on seven turf fields including three stadiums — Warhill Sports Complex, Bruton High School, and Bailey Field. 17 high school teams from around Hampton Roads will participate.
“Join us for the 2025 Keeper’s Cup — a celebration of soccer, community, and a steadfast commitment to saving lives through safe driving education,” Tammy Guido McGee, Conner’s mom, shared.
New to the cup this year is the distracted driving scavenger hunt. Players and spectators can visit outreach booths featuring representatives from fire, police, EMS, Students against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Virginia Tech, the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, victim advocates and more. The teen with the most QR code scans from each booth wins $250 cash, while the team with the most teens participating receives $400 for soccer equipment.
The tournament is free for high school teams to play. Game spectators are asked to donate $10 per person per day to help offset operational costs for referee fees, field rentals, and operations. Children under 12 are free and there is no fee to access the distracted driving area.
There will also be an online silent auction, two dine-to-donate nights (March 19 and 21) at Carrabba’s of Williamsburg, and a player photo booth on March 18 at Warhill High School. All proceeds will benefit Guido’s distracted driving outreach initiatives.
