Futsal Tournament
YORK COUNTY — Luke Messick Futbal Charities and the Conner Gweedo Memorial Foundation are hosting a 5v5 charity futsal tournament, called the Keepers Cup on Dec. 11-12, 2021 at the HR Sportsplex to help raise money and awareness for their organizations.
Registration was extended over the past weekend, and now over 20 teams have signed up to compete in the charity tournament. Teams are composed of U-14 and up, and the charity tournament welcomed co-ed teams in addition to adult teams.
“Every player who plays gets a raffle ticket and at the end of every game, we draw a winner for raffle prizes that have been donated here by a group of phenomenal local restaurants and merchants here in the area,” said Conner Gweedo Memorial Foundation founder, Tammy Guido. “We’ll have a food truck there. We’ll also have a DJ and music. It’s going to be a great event.”
Registration to compete in the tournament has closed, but the public is still encouraged to come out this weekend for other activities offered at the tournament.
“We’ll have an online silent auction with over 50 items including football tickets, soccer tickets, hockey tickets, dog training, fishing charters, and all of this is to raise money and awareness to help fund our foundations,” Tammy Guido said.
Both foundations were named after local soccer players that have passed away due to separate unrelated automobile accidents.
“We partnered together to raise awareness to distracted driving and to give these soccer kids an opportunity to come together and play soccer which is exactly what both of our boys would be doing if they were still here.”
The Two Organizations
Luke Messick FC: Before Joseph Luke Messick passed away, he was working on a charity that would benefit youth soccer programs in Ghana amongst other places. According to its website, “Luke Messick FC was created from plans Luke had before his passing. It was his hope to provide a permanent way to support youth soccer in Ghana and elsewhere. This program now continues.” The organization strives to promote youth soccer everywhere.
More information on how to donate to the organization can be found on its website.
Connor Gweedo Memorial Foundation: The Gweedo Memorial Foundation helps to educate teenage drivers on safe driving practices, raise funds for scholarships, and recently worked with Delegate Mugler to pass “Conner’s Law” in 2021 which will require a uniform state-mandated parking permit application for all Virginia public High schools which requires students to produce a valid driver’s license before a high school parking permit can be issued. Park of “Conner’s Law” requires the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to revamp the Driver Education curriculum in all Virginia high schools to include the dangers of reckless driving in addition to driving without a license.
